Braille and Literacy Resources

  • American Action Fund for Blind Children provides registered users in grades K-6 with National Geographic for Kids Magazine and other recently published books not produced in Braille. To learn more go to the American Action Fund.
  • American Printing House for the Blind in partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides 6 free books per year for children birth to age 6 through the Braille Tales program. To learn more visit the Braille Tales Program.
  • Bill of Rights for All Children with Visual Impairment and Their Families. Read the Bill of Rights in PDF.
  • Bookshare is an online accessible digital library for eligible students with print disabilities. To learn more go to www.bookshare.org.
  • Braille Institute provides several options for students to obtain Braille books. For more information read the list of programs below and go to the Braille Institute Special Collection.
    • Special Collection fiction & general interest books,
    • Dots for Tots – Multi-sensory storybook kits for age 2-5,
    • Top Dots – Braille literacy products for ages 4-7 or Early Braille readers, and
    • Digital Dots – downloadable braille files for high school books.
  • InfiniTEXT
    InfiniText provides digital text for qualified K-12 students with print disabilities to members of the Infinitec Assistive Technology Coalition and K-12 schools in Kansas.  To learn more go to the Infinitec website
  • Learning Ally: A nonprofit, volunteer organization that houses a library of audio textbooks for students with print disabilities.  To learn more visit the Learning Ally website.
  • Librivox: Library of audiobooks in the public domain read by volunteer readers. Visit Librivox.
  • The National Braille Press offers several programs with the overall goal to promote braille literacy. For more information read the list below and go to the NBP Braille Literacy Promotion
    • Read Books: One FREE braille literacy kit for families with children ages 0-7.
    • Great Expectations: Free online multi-sensory activities to enhance literacy.
    • Braille Book Club: 6 months ($50) or 12 months ($100) subscription to a braille book club, providing one book per month.
  • Oakmont Visual Aids Workshop provides tactual concepts books and materials for young children have are visually impaired. For additional information go to Teacher Aids for Blind Children.
  • Seedlings is a source for reasonably priced books in braille. In addition, they offer 3 free books per year to users who register annually. For additional information go to the Braille Angel Book Program
  • Talking Book Lending Library provides a library of audiobooks, digital downloadable books, and braille books through the Utah Braille lending library. Individuals with a visual impairment must register for this program. For the application process go to Kansas Talking Book Library
